Staying active is one of the best ways to protect your health as you get older. Regular movement strengthens muscles and bones, supports balance, lifts mood and helps you stay independent for longer.
The best part is that it is never too late to start. Here are gentle ways to keep moving safely.
Walk every day
Walking is simple, sociable and kind to the joints. Start with short, comfortable walks and gradually build up as your stamina improves.
Build strength
Gentle strength exercises, such as rising from a chair without using your hands, wall push-ups and light resistance bands, help maintain muscle and support everyday tasks.
Improve your balance
Good balance helps prevent falls. Practise standing on a single leg while holding a sturdy chair, walking heel to toe or joining a tai chi or yoga class.
Stay flexible
Regular stretching keeps joints supple and makes it easier to reach, bend and turn. Move slowly and never stretch to the point of pain.
Listen to your body
Warm up before exercise, drink water and stop if you feel dizzy, short of breath or unwell. Speak to your clinician before starting a new routine if you have a health condition.
Gardening, dancing, swimming and playing with grandchildren all count as activity, so choose what you enjoy.
Small, regular efforts add up to a stronger, more confident you.
